Anzac

Anzac Day

“At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them”. Anzac day is the remembrance of the Australians and the New Zealanders killed in war. Anzac day is very special to New Zealand and Australia.

That is why we wear the red poppy it is a symbol of war remembrance. The red poppy is like a little red flower with black pollen in the middle and a green stalk. The red poppy is like a badge you put on to show the people of War and Anzac Day. People usually put it on their collar or t-shirt.

Anzac day is on the 25th of April every year. Anzac day is a public holiday. Anzac day is on the 25th of April because it respects and shows the landing day of the Australians and the New Zealanders, at Turkey, Gallipoli, during 1915 in World War 1.

Anzac day stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps many have passed away from War. Including Turkish people, French people, Australian people and New Zealanders.

Anzac day is a public holiday ever since 1921. It has been 100 years now,  to date since Anzac landed in Gallipoli. Anzac day is commemorated for many years.

April the 25th is the day New Zealanders celebrate Anzac day as a nationwide special day. Anzac day is a very unique day for us to remember those who suffered and died in war.  It is the only day for everyone to come together and remember them forever.

From this day on we will never forget them! We will always remember them and keep them in our hearts!

Matilda book review 3

Screenshot 2015-04-12 at 09.42.35.pngMatilda

This book is about a little girl named “Matilda”. Matilda was very smart by the time she was three years old she learnt how to read. At four years old Matilda knew how to read very fast and very well that was when Matilda wished for more books to read. When Matilda was five she went to the library and had finished reading all the children's books. But Matilda’s parents were so sloppy they didn't teach her anything Matilda taught herself how to read that was unbelievable. Matilda had a best friend named “Lavender”. When Matilda was at school there was a mean principal named “Miss Trunchbull”. Miss Trunchbull was the meanest person in school! If she found anyone being naughty she would throw them in the “Chokey” or throw them like a ball. The Chokey is a room which had spikes on the door and belts to tie your hands and feet on. Miss Honey Matilda’s teacher was very surprised to have a child that smart in her class! Matilda was no ordinary child she had powers. Her powers were that her eyes could move stuff around! In the end of the story Matilda’s parents had to move but Miss Honey wanted Matilda to stay. So Miss Honey adopted her.

I recommend this book for 8 and over. I rate this book 10/10 because it was amazing. I want people to read this book and then watch the movie!

My Hippo Fossils

Hippo Fossils
By:Faith

The researchers have long suspected that the hippos developed from a family of plan-eating. They couldn't confirm it because it was discovered 15 million years ago.

Lihoreau and his team wanted to search for hippo fossils because they wanted to find a jaw, that became to be from an anthracotheres mammal. The teeth are so helpful because the molar patterns were so different. It made a connection from ancient-animals to modern- day animals.

The ancient hippo weighs no more than 220 pounds. They were related to the whales because of all there time they had spent in the water.

Lihoreau called the hippos the real Africa mammal because it is the only animal that is a true  African animal. Because it wasn't brought from other countries. Like the lions, zebras and antelopes which were brought from Asia.

Nikau

The Nikau Tree
  By:Faith

The Nikau Tree isn’t like all other trees like the palm trees, they grow in hot tropical countries except for the Nikau tree. Nikau tree is New Zealand native tree. The Nikau tree is the only tree in the whole world that grows in the cold far south.

In the early Maori years and the early Pakeha settlers would sometimes eat the big round shape or the bulb-shaped heart of the Nikau tree. Captain cook and the crew of the Endeavour ate the bulb-shaped of the Nikau tree as well. They had to destroy the tree to collect the food. Because of that now the meal is know as the ‘millionaire’s salad’.

When there was no bullets, bombs and rockets the Pakeha settlers, they use the little hard seeds from the Nikau tree to shoot birds down.  The Maori also used the Nikau fronds for the roofs. They also used the strip of the leaves for weaving kete or also weaving baskets .

When the bowl shape of the nikau tree has fallen off, this will be used for collecting water.

The Nikau tree  made of steel and copper, serve as a special icon to the Wellington Public Library.

You can also grow a Nikau tree yourself! The Nikau tree will take 20 years to grow a proper trunk.  But in the meantime they make a beautiful and pretty pot plant.

MY Chromebook information

Chromebook

The Chromebook really helped me in my learning because now, I can use it anywhere, any time and any place, instead of waiting in line just to use a computer. The Chromebook was also very helpful because Mrs Cochrane gives us new apps and websites. I could also research things I didn't understand instead of walking all the way to a dictionary. The thing that is so good about Chromebooks is that the WiFi is very fast so I could go on my Chromebook and to the internet straight away.

The new things I learnt while I used my Chromebook was CRC Convention of the Right of a Child. We learnt about Children who have the right to speak up and the right to do anything. UNICEF keep our children safe, because children are getting forced to do something they don’t want to don’t want to do. E.G marriage and war.
